How To Get Rid Of Stubborn Muscle Knots

By Carolina Cuartas - February 18, 2020

Muscle knots are small, bump-like areas of muscle that can be painful to the touch. These sensitive areas tighten and contract even when the muscles are at rest. Since there are a multitude of nerves running through these layers, it can ultimately cause the pain.

Why do knots form?

Knots form when your muscles are in a constant state of contraction and unable to relax. Most often they are the result of muscle overuse or poor posture. This can become an issue due to the regularity of working at your desk for hours and working out on a weekly basis. Over time these muscles will become painful and uncomfortable. They become dysfunctional because it’s unable to relax, creating knots and trigger points.

Many people alleviate knots by using a foam roller, tennis ball, or self-massage techniques. Although effective, this is more of a temporary treatment for muscle pain.

How to get rid of them?

Getting a massage is the most effective approach to getting rid of those stubborn aches, especially if they are in hard to reach places. Therapists look at connective issues as being one system and work through each muscle with that knowledge in place. They can also get to latent trigger points that you get to on your own. We recommend getting a Myofascial Release Massage. This is different than a Deep Tissue Massage. Myofascial release focuses on releasing the pressure on the specific layer it is located in. It is a slow, gentle approach to improving circulation and lengthening muscles which leads to healing (Source).
